How High is the Risk of Crime in the New Capital City?

President Joko Widodo has designated two regencies in East Kalimantan, namely Kutai Kartanegara and Penajam Paser Utara, as candidates for the new national capital. What is the crime risk level in these two regencies?

The crime risk level in Kutai Kartanegara and Penajam Paser Utara regencies shows a downward trend over the past three years. Based on BPS data, the risk of becoming a victim of crime in Kutai Kartanegara Regency in 2016 was 2,183 incidents per 100,000 people. This figure decreased to 925 incidents per 100,000 people in 2018. Similarly, in Penajam Paser Utara Regency, the risk of crime decreased from 1,474 incidents per 100,000 people in 2016 to 1,379 incidents per 100,000 population.

The regency/city with the highest crime risk throughout 2018 in East Kalimantan was Balikpapan City, reaching 3,232 incidents per 100,000 people. Meanwhile, the lowest was Kutai Timur Regency, with only 834 incidents per 100,000 people. The crime risk in East Kalimantan Province in 2018 was 164 incidents per 100,000 people, down from 209 incidents per 100,000 people the previous year.
