5 Factors Contributing to Accidents During the 2024 Eid Homecoming

According to the Indonesian National Police (Polri), there were 3,286 traffic accidents during the 2024 Lebaran homecoming period. This data was compiled from Operation Ketupat 2024, which was held by the Polri from April 4th to 16th, 2024.

"Overall, there was an 8% decrease in traffic accidents and a 12% decrease in fatalities," said Head of the Indonesian National Police Traffic Corps, Aan Suhanan, in a statement on Sunday, April 21st, 2024.

The most frequent cause of accidents was failing to maintain a safe distance, with 1,117 cases. This accounts for 34% of the total traffic accidents during this year's Lebaran homecoming period.

Next, there were accidents due to reckless drivers failing to observe oncoming traffic (956 cases), and reckless turning (553 cases).

Furthermore, there were accidents caused by speeding (397 cases), and violations of lane markings (442 cases).

Aan mentioned that physical fatigue was also a contributing factor to accidents.

"If we look at the accident patterns, fatigue is likely a factor, as failing to maintain distance and lack of concentration, leading to rear-end collisions, are major contributing factors," he said.
