How Many Indonesian Muslims are Religiously Observant?

A large majority of Indonesia's Muslim population is estimated to have strong religious "adherence" or commitment.

This is reflected in the research report *The Age Gap in Religion Around the World*, released by the Pew Research Center in 2018.

During the 2008-2017 period, the Pew Research Center conducted surveys on religious "adherence" among the world's Muslim population. This "adherence" was measured, among other things, by asking respondents how important religion is to their lives.

The results showed that 93% of Muslim respondents in Indonesia stated that Islam plays a very important role in their lives.

Although this percentage is high, several other countries achieved higher rates than Indonesia. In Ethiopia, for example, 99% of Muslim respondents stated that religion is very important to their lives.

Other countries with higher percentages of religious "adherence" than Indonesia include Ghana, Kenya, Thailand, Nigeria, and Pakistan, with details as shown in the graph.

"Generally, religion is considered very important in the lives of Muslims in Africa, the Middle East, South Asia, and Southeast Asia. However, religion is considered less important by Muslims in Europe and the former Soviet Union," the Pew Research Center explained in its report.
