10 Provinces with the Highest Percentage of Muslims in 2021

The Directorate General of Population and Civil Registration (Dukcapil) of the Ministry of Home Affairs recorded a total of 238.09 million Indonesians as Muslim as of December 31, 2021. This means that 86.93% of Indonesia's population are Muslims.

Aceh is recorded as the province with the highest percentage of Muslim residents in Indonesia. The number of Muslims in Aceh (also known as the "Veranda of Mecca") is 5.27 million, or 98.57% of its total population of 5.35 million.

The next province with the largest proportion of Muslim residents is Gorontalo, reaching 98.02% of the total population. This is followed by Bengkulu with 97.68% of its population practicing Islam, West Sumatra with 97.6%, and West Java with 97.31%.

Following these are Central Java with 97.28% of its population adhering to Islam, East Java with 97.23%, South Sumatra with 97.18%, and South Kalimantan and West Nusa Tenggara with 97.02% and 96.84% respectively.

Of these 10 provinces, West Java had the largest Muslim population in December 2021.
