Data Check: Anies Says Papua's Problem is Injustice, What About Papua's Welfare?

Presidential candidate Anies Baswedan stated that the main issue in the Papua conflict is the lack of justice. This statement was made during the 2024 Presidential Candidate Debate held at the KPU office in Central Jakarta on Tuesday, December 12, 2023. The debate's theme was Governance, Law, Human Rights, Corruption Eradication, Strengthening Democracy, Improving Public Services, and Interfaith Harmony.

“The main problem is the absence of justice in Papua. So, the goal is not merely to eliminate violence, because peace is not the absence of violence, but the presence of justice,” said Anies.

According to data from the Central Statistics Agency (Badan Pusat Statistik), Papua and West Papua are two provinces with the highest poverty rates in Indonesia. Papua's poverty rate reaches 26.03%, and West Papua's reaches 20.49%.
