Based on population data from the Directorate General of Population and Civil Registration (Dukcapil) of the Ministry of Home Affairs, West Sumatra Province had a population of 5.75 million as of mid-2024.

Padang City is the most populous area in West Sumatra Province, with 934,850 inhabitants (16.26%) of the total population.

Next is Agam Regency with a population of 530,120 (9.22%), Pesisir Selatan Regency with 528,380 (9.19%), and Padang Pariaman Regency with 455,220 (7.92%).

Meanwhile, Padang Panjang City has the smallest population, with only 62,730 inhabitants (1.09%).
