20.7 Million Hectares of Customary Land Registered, Details of its Status

The Indigenous Customary Territory Registration Agency (BRWA) reported that the area of registered customary territories in Indonesia had reached 20.7 million hectares (ha) by August 9, 2022. These registered customary territories are spread across 29 provinces and 142 regencies/cities, with a total of 1,119 customary territory maps.

BRWA's registration status has four stages: certification, verification, registration, and recorded.

Details are as follows: 634,210 ha of customary territory area has been certified, with a total of 47 maps. 3 million ha of customary territory area has been verified, with a total of 144 maps.

Furthermore, 17.07 million ha of customary territory area has been registered, with a total of 923 maps. Meanwhile, only 74,260 ha of customary territory area is recorded, with a total of 5 maps.

Based on their recognition status, 3.09 million ha of customary territory has been designated. 15.61 million ha of customary territory has been regulated. Meanwhile, 2.07 million ha of customary territory remains unrecognized.

It should be noted that Maluku and Papua have the largest area of customary territories in Indonesia, reaching 8.8 million ha. Kalimantan has 7.6 million ha, Sumatra 2 million ha, and Sulawesi 1.6 million ha.

Meanwhile, the Java-Bali-Nusa Tenggara region has the smallest area of customary territories, only 600,000 ha.
