North Sumatra's Population Reaches 15.47 Million, 16% Reside in Medan City at the End of 2023

According to population data from the Directorate General of Population and Civil Registration (Dukcapil) of the Ministry of Home Affairs, the population of North Sumatra Province was 15.47 million at the end of 2023.

Medan City is the most populous area in North Sumatra Province, with 2.54 million inhabitants (16.39%) of the total population.

Next is Deli Serdang Regency with a population of 2.03 million (13.13%), Langkat Regency with 1.1 million (7.13%), and Simalungun Regency with 1.03 million (6.63%).

Meanwhile, Pakpak Bharat Regency has the smallest population, with only 56,730 inhabitants (0.37%).

Administratively, North Sumatra Province is divided into 8 cities and 25 regencies, with 21 districts comprising 151 urban villages.

Based on marital status, 43.58% of the population of North Sumatra Province is married, while 50.94% are unmarried. The population with divorced and widowed statuses reached 1.0% and 4.48%, respectively.
