COVID-19 statistics in Asia this week still depict a concerning situation, with high death tolls remaining in most countries. This week, eight countries recorded an increase in deaths, while five others recorded fewer deaths.
In terms of percentage, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths are Cyprus, the Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia, and Japan. The total deaths in these five countries as of Tuesday, January 17, 2023, amounted to 2,975, with weekly growth exceeding 15.1 percent.
Cyprus ranked first, with a 100 percent weekly increase in deaths. Worldometer recorded eight deaths in the country, an increase from the four reported the previous week.
The Philippines followed, with a weekly growth in deaths reaching 80.28 percent. Daily death figures in the country increased by 12.28% compared to the previous day, which recorded 114 deaths.
Furthermore, deaths in Singapore increased by 50%, Malaysia by 31 deaths (up 24%), and Japan by 2,805 deaths (up 15.1%).
Looking at the number of reported deaths, the highest number of deaths in Asia over the past seven days occurred in Japan, with 2,805 deaths. Death reports in this country increased by 15.1% compared to the previous week. Following Japan, South Korea recorded 359 deaths (up 1.7%), Taiwan recorded 291 deaths (up 2.83%), the Philippines recorded 128 deaths (up 80.28%), and Thailand recorded 65 deaths (up 12.07%).
Total deaths in Asia over the past seven days reached 3,806. This accounts for 41.3 percent of global deaths caused by the COVID-19 virus, totaling 9,216. The number of deaths in Asia increased compared to the previous seven-day accumulation of 3,400 deaths.
