The Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant of the Covid-19 virus continues to spread globally, reaching 6.06 million cases by Wednesday, January 18, 2023. According to GISAID data, the United States has recorded the highest number of Omicron cases, at 2.11 million. This represents 34.77 percent of the total global Omicron cases.
The United Kingdom follows, with a weekly growth rate of 0.49 percent in Omicron cases. A total of 1.38 million Omicron cases were reported in the country. Daily statistics show a 0.07 percent increase in Omicron cases compared to the previous day, also totaling 1.38 million.
Next, Germany saw a 0.33 percent increase in Omicron cases, reaching 511,230 compared to the previous week. Denmark reported 347,070 Omicron cases (a 0.62 percent increase), and Japan saw a 3.95 percent increase, reaching 339,750 cases compared to the previous week.
In Indonesia, the number of Omicron cases reached 33,343, a 0.28 percent increase compared to the previous day. Since its initial detection, the number of Omicron cases in Indonesia has steadily risen.
The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) urges everyone to remain vigilant in the face of the global surge in Omicron cases. The public is advised to consistently adhere to the 3M health protocols: wearing masks, maintaining distance, and washing hands.
