The Covid-19 situation in Indonesia is becoming alarming. This is evident from the surge in active Covid-19 cases in recent weeks since the outbreak of the Omicron XBB variant in the country.
According to the Covid-19 Task Force report, the number of active Covid-19 cases in Indonesia reached 37,048 as of November 6, 2022.
This number increased by 1,145 cases from the previous day. Compared to a week earlier, active Covid-19 cases increased by 50.94%.
By province, DKI Jakarta still dominated national active Covid-19 cases on November 6, 2022, with 12,702 cases. This figure is equivalent to 34.28% of the total active Covid-19 cases in Indonesia.
West Java is in second place with a total of 7,144 active Covid-19 cases. Followed by Central Java, Banten, East Java, and Yogyakarta Special Region, which recorded 3,098 cases, 2,600 cases, 2,141 cases, and 1,395 active Covid-19 cases, respectively.
In total, around 6.52 million people in Indonesia have been infected with Covid-19 until November 6, 2022. 2.43% of them died, and 96.99% recovered.
The Head of the Covid-19 Task Force of the Indonesian Doctors Association (PB IDI), Erlina Burhan, said that the Omicron XBB variant is attacking many people who have never been infected with Covid-19. Based on age, XBB also attacks many young people aged 20-39 years.
However, severe infections requiring hospitalization more frequently affect the elderly over 70 years old due to their relatively lower immunity. The elderly also have more comorbidities, increasing the severity of Covid-19 infection.
"Therefore, be careful with the elderly population. Although generally the cases are mild, if it attacks the elderly, it requires hospitalization," said Erlina, as quoted from Kompas.com, Friday (November 4).
