The Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant of the Covid-19 virus continues to spread globally, reaching 5.72 million cases by Saturday, February 25, 2023. According to GISAID data, Ukraine recorded the highest increase in Omicron cases, with 1,452 new cases. The total number of Omicron cases in Ukraine currently represents 0.03 percent of the global total.
Next is Namibia, which recorded a 4.93 percent increase in Omicron cases compared to the previous week. Daily data shows a 2.2 percent increase in Omicron cases compared to the previous day.
Furthermore, Omicron cases in Japan increased by 2.64 percent to 384,530 compared to the previous week; in China (PRC) by 2.53 percent to 15,209 cases; and in Brazil by 2.46 percent to 100,460 cases.
Meanwhile, in Indonesia, the number of Omicron cases reached 34,444, a 0.05 percent increase compared to the previous day. Since it was first monitored, Omicron cases in Indonesia have continued to rise.
The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) urges everyone to remain vigilant in the face of the global surge in Omicron cases. The public is urged to consistently adhere to the 3M health protocols: wearing masks, maintaining distance, and washing hands.
