Plant-based milk is an alternative for lactose-intolerant individuals who cannot consume animal milk. Currently, there is a wide variety of plant-based milk options available to consumers.
According to FoodNavigator USA data compiled from SPINS, retail sales of plant-based milk in the United States reached US$2.29 billion in the first half of 2022.
This figure represents a 6.4% year-on-year (YoY) growth from the same period the previous year.
Almond milk was the best-selling plant-based milk in the United States, recording retail sales of US$1.27 billion.
Despite having the largest sales, almond milk sales decreased by 1.02% during that period.
Oat milk followed in second place with total retail sales of US$527.44 million.
FoodNavigator USA found that oat milk had not been previously recorded in US retail sales figures in the five years prior.
However, up to June 2022, its sales growth was the highest, reaching 50.52% (YoY).
Soy milk followed with retail sales of US$165.09 million, followed by coconut milk at US$82.1 million. Sales of both decreased by 0.09% and 8.16% year-on-year, respectively.
In addition, other popular plant-based milks in the United States include pea milk, rice milk, and cashew milk, with retail sales values as shown in the accompanying graph.
