This week's COVID-19 statistics in Asia still depict a concerning situation, with high death tolls remaining in most countries. Fourteen countries recorded increased deaths this week, while seven others reported deaths, but in smaller numbers.
Percentage-wise, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths are Hong Kong, Cyprus, Bahrain, Singapore, and Macau. The total deaths in these five countries as of Monday, July 18, 2022, amounted to 62, with a weekly growth exceeding 50 percent.
Hong Kong recorded the highest increase in COVID-19 deaths in Asia, with weekly growth reaching 228.57 percent. Worldometer recorded 23 deaths in the country, an increase compared to the previous week's reported seven deaths.
Next is Cyprus, which recorded 75 percent more deaths compared to the previous week. The country reported seven more deaths than the previous week's four. Deaths in Bahrain increased by 75%, Singapore by 22 deaths (up 57.14%), and Macau by three deaths (up 50%).
Looking at the number of reported deaths, the highest number of deaths in the last seven days in Asia occurred in Taiwan with 550 deaths. Death reports in this country decreased by 17.66% compared to the previous week. Following Taiwan, India recorded 281 deaths (up 21.65%), Thailand with 165 deaths (up 22.22%), Japan with 156 deaths (up 44.44%), and South Korea with 104 deaths (up 42.47%).
A total of 1,603 deaths were recorded in Asia over the past seven days. This accounts for 14.66 percent of global deaths caused by the COVID-19 virus, totaling 10,932 deaths. The death toll in Asia decreased compared to the previous seven-day accumulation of 1,612 deaths.
