According to the National Socioeconomic Survey (Susenas) by the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the proportion of Indonesian residents aged 15 and over who smoke reached 28.26% in March 2022, a slight decrease from the previous year's 28.96%.
Broken down by province, the highest proportion of smokers aged 15 and over was in Lampung, at 33.81%. This means that approximately 1 in 3 residents of Lampung smoked in the last month.
The next highest proportions of smokers were in West Nusa Tenggara (33.2%), followed by Bengkulu (32.16%) and West Java (32.07%).
Conversely, only 17.91% of Bali residents aged 15 and over smoked, the lowest in Indonesia. This was followed by Jakarta (21.25%) and South Kalimantan (21.89%).
Nationally, 21.69% of urban residents aged 15 and over smoked, compared to 25.35% in rural areas.
By gender, 45.34% of males aged 15 and over smoked, while only 0.78% of females did.
