The Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant of the Covid-19 virus continues to spread globally, reaching 3.69 million cases by Monday, August 29, 2022. According to GISAID data, Trinidad and Tobago recorded the highest increase in Omicron cases, with 1,454 new cases. The total number of Omicron cases in Trinidad and Tobago currently represents 0.04 percent of the global total.
Algeria follows in second place. Compared to the previous week, Omicron cases in this country increased by 11.05 percent. Daily data shows a 1.06 percent increase in Omicron cases compared to the previous day, which recorded 189 cases.
Furthermore, new Omicron cases in Vietnam increased by 7.14 percent to 3,076 compared to the previous week; Omicron cases in Indonesia increased by 6.64 percent to 20,200 compared to the previous week; and Omicron cases in Japan increased by 6.47 percent to 186,150 compared to the previous week.
As for Indonesia, the number of Omicron cases recorded today stands at 20,200, a 0.35 percent increase compared to the previous day. Since it was first monitored, the number of Omicron cases in Indonesia has continued to rise.
The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) urges all parties to remain vigilant in the face of the global surge in Omicron cases. The public is urged to consistently adhere to the 3M health protocols: wearing masks, maintaining distance, and washing hands.
