The Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant of the Covid-19 virus continues to spread globally, reaching 3.75 million cases by Thursday, July 21, 2022. Uganda leads with a 40% weekly increase in Omicron cases, recording 287 new cases according to GISAID. Daily cases in the region increased by 29.86% compared to the previous day.
Taiwan follows with a 25.26% weekly growth in Omicron cases, reporting 119 new cases. Daily statistics show a 23.96% increase in Omicron cases compared to the previous day, which recorded 96 cases.
Next, Réunion saw a 24.89% increase in Omicron cases, reaching 5,460 compared to the previous week. Pakistan reported 1,027 new Omicron cases (a 20.12% increase), and Kazakhstan reported 555 new Omicron cases (a 16.35% increase).
Meanwhile, in Indonesia, 16,032 Omicron cases were recorded, a 0.04% increase compared to the previous day. Since its initial detection, Omicron cases in Indonesia have continued to rise.
The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) urges everyone to remain vigilant in the face of the global surge in Omicron cases. The public is urged to consistently adhere to the 3M health protocols: wearing masks, maintaining distance, and washing hands.
