Female workers in Indonesia are entitled to three months of maternity leave. This is stipulated in Article 82 Paragraph 1 of Law Number 13/2003 on Manpower. The law states: “Female workers/laborers are entitled to a rest period of 1.5 months before the expected delivery date and 1.5 months after delivery, as calculated by an obstetrician or midwife.”
However, what is the ideal maternity leave duration according to the public?
According to a Populix survey, the majority (56%) of respondents stated that the ideal maternity leave is three months. This opinion was most frequently voiced by female respondents.
Next, 17% of respondents considered two months to be the ideal maternity leave duration. Another 15% believed maternity leave should be more than four months.
Meanwhile, only 11% of respondents stated that one month of maternity leave is sufficient, and 1% believed that less than one month is adequate.
This survey also found that the majority (56%) of companies in Indonesia have provided maternity leave in accordance with regulations, namely three months. Only a small percentage (2%) provided leave exceeding three months.
Populix conducted this online survey from February 22-25, 2024, involving 683 workers in Indonesia. Respondents consisted of 56% male and 44% female.
The majority of respondents were located on Java Island (82%), followed by Sumatra Island (12%), and other islands (6%). Respondents were dominated by the 17-25 age group (30%) and the 26-35 age group (25%).
