In 2021, Japan was ranked the world's best tourism destination according to the Travel & Tourism Development Index (TTDI).
The TTDI is an index compiled by the World Economic Forum (WEF) to measure the progress of tourism development in each country.
The WEF assessed Japan's tourism as superior due to various factors, including its excellent healthcare and hygiene facilities.
Japan was also recognized for its excellent transport infrastructure, rich cultural and natural attractions, and abundant non-recreational resources (such as business facilities, universities, and hospitals) that attract international visitors.
According to data from the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO), the number of international tourists visiting Japan has steadily increased over the past decade.
The peak was recorded in 2019, when Japan received approximately 31.88 million international tourist visits.
However, from 2020 to 2021, the number of tourist visits to Japan plummeted due to the Covid-19 pandemic, mirroring the fate of other countries.
Since 2022, international tourist visits to Japan have begun to rise again, although they have not yet returned to pre-pandemic levels, as shown in the graph above.
When they recorded a record number of visits in 2019, the majority of international tourists to Japan came from China (30%), South Korea (18%), Taiwan (15%), Hong Kong (7%), the United States (5%), and Thailand (4%).
Meanwhile, tourists from other countries visiting Japan in 2019 accounted for less than 2% each.
