Indonesian Umrah pilgrims constitute one of the largest groups globally. According to the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Hajj and Umrah, the number of Umrah visas issued to Indonesia in 2016 reached 699,600 pilgrims, a 7.2 percent increase from the previous year. This makes Indonesia the third largest contributor of Umrah pilgrims worldwide.
In 2016, the Saudi Arabian government issued the most Umrah visas to Egypt, with 1.3 million pilgrims, a 17 percent increase from the previous year's 1.1 million. Pakistan ranked second with 991,000 visas, a 29 percent increase from the previous year's 703,850. The total number of Umrah visas issued in 2016 reached 6.39 million, a 7.5 percent increase from the previous year's 5.9 million.
The enthusiasm among Indonesian people to perform Umrah is considerable. Because the waiting list for Hajj, the fifth pillar of Islam, can be decades long, the Umrah business thrives in Indonesia. For approximately Rp 20 million, Indonesians can visit the Holy Land and enjoy recreation without having to join the Hajj waiting list.
