Breast milk (ASI) is a crucial nutrient for infants from birth to the first six months of life. This is because breast milk contains numerous nutrients and antibodies essential for early childhood development. Therefore, breastfeeding mothers are encouraged to provide exclusive breastfeeding (without additional supplements) to their babies from birth until they are six months old.
Statistics Indonesia (BPS) recorded that breastfeeding mothers in Yogyakarta are most diligent in providing exclusive breastfeeding to their infants. This is reflected in the proportion of infants under six months old receiving exclusive breastfeeding in the province, which reached 28.93% in 2020.
This figure is the highest compared to other provinces in Indonesia. Furthermore, the proportion of infants under six months old receiving exclusive breastfeeding in Yogyakarta is above the national average of 69.52%.
Besides Yogyakarta, there are 12 other provinces with a proportion of infants under six months old receiving exclusive breastfeeding above the national average. Meanwhile, 21 other provinces have a proportion below the national average.
The province with the lowest proportion of infants under six months old receiving exclusive breastfeeding is Central Kalimantan, at 52.98%. Following this is North Sumatra with a proportion of 53.39%.
