One in four Indonesian youth smoke every day.

In 2015, at least 1 in 4 young people in Indonesia were smokers. The National Socioeconomic Survey (Susenas) shows that of the 61.7 million young people aged 16 to 30, 27 percent were active smokers. Meanwhile, in terms of smoking intensity, there were far more heavy smokers among young people than casual smokers. A heavy smoker is defined as someone who smokes at least one cigarette a day. Almost a quarter of Indonesian youth in 2015 were heavy smokers (24.25 percent).

Young smokers are generally male; more than half of young men are active smokers. Although relatively small, Susenas data shows that the percentage of women smokers aged 16-30 is less than one percent. The relatively low price and easy access to cigarettes are the main reasons for the high number of smokers in Indonesia. To address this, the government has also implemented various regulations related to cigarettes, such as designating smoke-free zones, including health warnings in the form of images on cigarette packaging, and increasing cigarette excise taxes.
