The National Monument, or Monas, is a favorite destination for domestic and foreign tourists in Jakarta.
However, the number of tourist visits to Monas plummeted by 96.34% year-on-year (yoy), according to a report by the Central Statistics Agency (BPS). Last year, the total number of tourist visits to Monas reached 443,030.
It should be noted that Monas was closed since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic and due to revitalization work. Recently, the Jakarta Provincial Government announced it will reopen this famous capital city tourist attraction.
"We will open it in the near future, it will be opened this week," said Jakarta Deputy Governor Ahmad Riza Patria, as quoted by Katadata.co.id on Thursday (16/6/2022).
Previously, the number of tourist visits to this iconic landmark had been increasing over the past decade.
Tourist visits to Monas were recorded at 1.25 million in 2010. This increased to 1.51 million in 2011.
Then, the number of tourist visits to Monas decreased to 1.41 million in 2012, then to 1.38 million in 2013, and 1.15 million in 2014. Subsequently, the number increased again to 1.53 million in 2015.
In 2016, the number of tourist visits to Monas rose to 1.87 million. Then, the number decreased to 1.86 million in 2017 and increased again to 1.97 million in 2018.
In 2019, tourist visits to Monas were recorded at 12.11 million. This was the highest number of visits in the last 10 years.
