According to the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), in 2023 approximately 11.75% of Indonesia's population was aged 60 and above, belonging to the elderly group (elderly).
Within this elderly group, 23.91% had a smoking habit. This breaks down to 21.79% of elderly individuals smoking daily, and 2.13% smoking occasionally.
In the report *Statistics of the Elderly Population 2023*, BPS noted, "Elderly individuals who smoke daily are significantly more at risk of developing diseases than those who never smoked."
The proportion of elderly individuals who never smoked reached 74.06% in 2023, while 2.03% of the elderly chose to quit smoking.
The highest proportion of smoking elderly individuals was recorded among men, at 48.20%. Meanwhile, only 1.75% of elderly women smoked.
BPS also recorded that in 2023, 41.49% of the elderly experienced health complaints, with a morbidity rate of 19.72%.
This morbidity rate indicates elderly individuals whose health complaints interfered with their daily activities.
According to BPS, the health condition of the elderly reflects their lifestyle, including smoking habits.
BPS obtained this data from the National Socioeconomic Survey (Susenas) conducted in March 2023. The survey involved 345,000 household samples spread across 34 provinces and 514 regencies/cities in Indonesia.
