This week's COVID-19 statistics in Asia still depict a concerning situation compared to the previous week, due to a persistent increase in the number of deaths. This week, 12 countries recorded an increase in deaths, while eight others recorded deaths, albeit in smaller numbers.
In terms of percentage, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths are Singapore, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Cyprus, and Azerbaijan. The total deaths in these five countries as of Tuesday, December 20, 2022, amounted to 25, with a weekly growth exceeding 50 percent.
Singapore ranks first, with a 200 percent increase in weekly deaths. In this country, Worldometer recorded three deaths, a 50 percent increase compared to the previous day.
Vietnam follows in second place. Compared to the previous week, deaths in this country grew by 100 percent. The daily death toll increased by 100% compared to the previous day, which recorded one death.
Furthermore, deaths in Sri Lanka increased by 100%, Cyprus recorded eight deaths (up 60%), and Azerbaijan recorded six deaths (up 50%).
Looking at the number of reported deaths, the highest number of deaths in the last seven days in Asia occurred in Japan, with 1,670 deaths. Death reports in this country increased by 22.08% compared to the previous week. Following Japan, South Korea reported the highest number of deaths with 335 (up 1.52%), Hong Kong with 226 deaths (up 43.04%), Taiwan with 203 deaths (down 3.33%), and the Philippines with 192 deaths (up 26.32%).
The total number of COVID-19 deaths in Asia over the past seven days was 3,077. This accounts for 30.94 percent of global COVID-19 deaths, which totaled 9,944. The number of deaths in Asia increased compared to the previous seven-day accumulation of 2,726 deaths.
