The Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant of the Covid-19 virus continues to spread globally, reaching 4.78 million cases by Wednesday, July 27, 2022. The Dominican Republic recorded the highest increase in Omicron cases, with weekly growth reaching 107.19 percent. GISAID recorded 288 new Omicron cases in the country. Daily cases in this region increased by 26.32 percent compared to the previous day.
Venezuela followed in second place. Compared to the previous week, Omicron cases in the country grew by 53.23 percent. Daily Omicron cases increased by 3.26 percent compared to the previous day, totaling 92 cases.
Furthermore, Omicron cases in Cape Verde increased by 27.35 percent to 284 cases compared to the previous week, French Guiana saw an increase of 849 Omicron cases (up 26.91%), and Pakistan saw a 25.13 percent increase to 1,175 cases compared to the previous week.
Meanwhile, in Indonesia, 16,432 Omicron cases were recorded as of yesterday, a 0.05 percent increase compared to the previous day. Since it was first monitored, Omicron cases in Indonesia have continued to rise.
The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) urges everyone to remain vigilant in the face of the global surge in Omicron cases. The public is urged to consistently adhere to the 3M health protocols: wearing masks, maintaining distance, and washing hands.
