According to a Forbes Advisor report, over 600,000 couples in the United States (US) reported divorces in 2021. This figure is almost half of the total number of marriages in the country.
So, what are the reasons that lead US citizens to divorce?
Forbes Advisor notes that several reasons for divorce were cited in court. The majority, or 43% of respondents in the US, stated that lack of family support was their primary reason for divorce.
"Lack of family support becomes a bigger issue over time. This is the leading cause of divorce among those ending marriages within two to eight years," wrote Forbes Advisor in its report.
The next reason was infidelity or extramarital affairs, cited by 43% of respondents.
This was followed by incompatibility, lack of intimacy, and excessive conflict, which were reasons for divorce cited by 31% of respondents.
Meanwhile, divorce due to domestic violence (physical or emotional) ranked second to last, with a proportion of 3%.
This survey was conducted on 1,000 US respondents who had divorced or were in the process of divorcing.
Forbes Advisor did not specify when this data was collected, but the survey was published on August 16, 2023, with a margin of error of approximately 3.1% and a 95% confidence level.
