The Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant of the Covid-19 virus continues to spread globally, reaching 960,410 cases by Tuesday, February 8, 2022. According to GISAID data, Réunion Island recorded the highest increase in Omicron cases, with 1,214 new cases. The total number of Omicron cases in Réunion currently represents 0.13 percent of the global total.
Next is Iran (Islamic Republic), which reported a 500 percent increase in Omicron cases compared to the previous week. Daily data shows a 200 percent increase in new Omicron cases compared to the previous day.
Furthermore, Omicron cases in Iraq increased by 450 percent to 55 cases compared to the previous week; Omicron cases in Martinique increased by 280 percent to 57 cases compared to the previous week; and Omicron cases in Mozambique increased by 203.7 percent to 82 cases compared to the previous week.
Meanwhile, in Indonesia, the number of Omicron cases reached 4,119, an 8.97 percent increase compared to the previous day. Since its first detection, the number of Omicron cases in Indonesia has continued to rise.
The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) urges all parties to remain vigilant in the face of the global surge in Omicron cases. The public is urged to consistently adhere to the 3M health protocols: wearing masks, maintaining distance, and washing hands.
