Borobudur Temple is one of the most visited tourist destinations, both domestically and internationally. However, the number of visitors to this tourist site plummeted due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
According to a report by the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the number of tourists visiting the tourist site located in Magelang, Central Java, was only 997,250 people in 2020.
The details are as follows: the number of domestic tourists visiting Borobudur Temple in 2020 was 965,699 people. Meanwhile, the number of foreign tourists visiting the tourist site was 31,551 people.
This figure decreased by approximately 75% compared to the previous year. The number of tourists visiting Borobudur Temple in 2019 reached 3,989,839 people.
The government plans to increase the ticket price to climb the Borobudur Temple stupa. The ticket price to climb Borobudur Temple is planned to be IDR 750,000 per person for local tourists and US$100 or IDR 1.45 million per person for foreign tourists. For students, the ticket price is much cheaper, at IDR 5,000 per person.
In addition to raising the ticket price to climb the Borobudur Temple stupa, the government will also limit the number of tourist visits to the site to 1,200 people per day.
