Based on data from the Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) processed by the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), there were 16,410 new cases of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) in Indonesia throughout 2023.
The Kemenkes defines AIDS as a collection of symptoms caused by a weakened immune system due to Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection.
In 2023, the most new AIDS cases were found in West Java, namely 2,575 cases or 16% of the total new national cases.
The next highest number of new cases were found in East Java (2,432 cases) and Central Java (2,008 cases).
All 38 provinces in Indonesia recorded new AIDS cases last year.
The fewest new cases were recorded in South Papua (16 cases), West Sulawesi (20 cases), and Papua Pegunungan (28 cases).
The following is a list of the 10 provinces with the highest number of new AIDS cases nationally throughout 2023:
1. West Java: 2,575 new cases
2. East Java: 2,432 new cases
3. Central Java: 2,008 new cases
4. Bali: 1,680 new cases
5. Jakarta: 1,229 new cases
6. North Sumatra: 893 new cases
7. Banten: 622 new cases
8. South Sulawesi: 413 new cases
9. East Nusa Tenggara: 358 new cases
10. West Kalimantan: 333 new cases
