The Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics (PCBS) compiled the number of healthcare workers (HCWs) in Palestine in 2019. These HCWs comprised doctors, dentists, nurses, and pharmaceutical personnel/pharmacists.
In total, Palestine had 13,057 doctors; 4,798 dentists; 18,946 nurses; and 7,948 pharmacists.
These figures represent a combined total from the West Bank and Gaza Strip, with the West Bank having a larger number of HCWs than Gaza.
The West Bank had 8,386 doctors; 3,643 dentists; 9,751 nurses; and 5,059 pharmacists.
The Gaza Strip had 5,121 doctors; 1,335 dentists; 9,195 nurses; and 2,889 pharmacists.
Overwhelmed Healthcare Workers Due to Israeli Bombardment
According to *Al-Jazeera*, hospitals have not been spared from Israeli bombing raids. Journalist Youmna ElSayed reported panic at Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City. HCWs and others were overwhelmed by the influx of casualties.
“Several families have already started taking their relatives to empty the morgue. No funerals are being held due to the intensity of the bombing (from Israel),” said the journalist in a report on Wednesday, November 10, 2023.
The Israeli blockade of Palestine has worsened the situation. Staff at Al-Shifa reported shortages of medicines and medical equipment, while power outages further exacerbated the crisis.
“Gaza has only received electricity for four hours in the last two days,” reported ElSayed. “The only power plant here can only operate for a maximum of two more days after that,” she added.
Israel has been attacking Palestine since October 8, 2023, claiming it as retaliation for attacks by the Palestinian militant group Hamas on October 7, 2023.
*Financial Times* reported the death toll in Israel as 1,200 and in Palestine as 950 on Wednesday, October 11, 2023.
