The Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant of the Covid-19 virus continues to spread globally, reaching 6.18 million cases by Wednesday, May 31, 2023. According to GISAID data, Taiwan recorded the highest increase in Omicron cases, with 2,846 new cases. The total number of Omicron cases in Taiwan currently represents 0.05 percent of the global total.
Vietnam followed, recording a 3.59 percent increase in Omicron cases compared to the previous week. Daily data shows a 0.08 percent increase in Omicron cases compared to the previous day.
Furthermore, Omicron cases in China (PRC) increased by 3.37 percent to 32,502 compared to the previous week. Singapore saw a 2.29 percent increase to 24,890 cases compared to the previous week, and Colombia reported 13,654 new Omicron cases (a 1.41% increase).
In Indonesia, the number of Omicron cases reached 37,780, a 0.06 percent increase compared to the previous day. Since its initial detection, Omicron cases in Indonesia have continued to rise.
The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) urges everyone to remain vigilant in the face of the global surge in Omicron cases. The public is advised to consistently adhere to the 3M health protocols: wearing masks, maintaining distance, and washing hands.
