This week's COVID-19 statistics in Asia still depict a concerning situation, with high death tolls remaining in most countries. Fifteen countries recorded increased deaths this week, while eleven others reported deaths, albeit in smaller numbers.
In terms of percentage increase, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths are Hong Kong, Lebanon, Turkey, Cyprus, and Bahrain. The total deaths in these five countries as of Sunday, July 17, 2022, amounted to 56, with a weekly growth exceeding 75 percent.
Hong Kong recorded the highest increase in COVID-19 deaths in Asia, with weekly growth reaching 340 percent. Worldometer recorded 22 deaths in the country, a significant increase compared to the five deaths reported the previous week.
Lebanon follows with a 100 percent weekly increase in deaths. The country reported 12 deaths, compared to six the previous week.
Rounding out the top five, Turkey reported eight deaths (a 100% increase), Cyprus saw a 75% increase in deaths, and Bahrain also experienced a 75% increase.
Looking at the total number of reported deaths, Taiwan had the highest number of deaths in Asia over the past seven days, with 572 fatalities. This represents a 16.5% decrease compared to the previous week. Following Taiwan, India recorded 274 deaths (a 19.65% increase), Thailand reported 160 deaths (a 21.21% increase), Japan recorded 151 deaths (a 42.45% increase), and South Korea reported 107 deaths (a 72.58% increase).
A total of 1,612 deaths were recorded in Asia over the past seven days. This accounts for 14.39 percent of global COVID-19 deaths, which totaled 11,204. The number of deaths in Asia decreased compared to the previous seven-day period, which saw 1,639 deaths.
