Data from Indonesia's Central Statistics Agency (BPS) shows that the average spending by foreign tourists visiting Indonesia in 2023 reached US$1,625.36, or approximately Rp26.4 million per visit (assuming an exchange rate of Rp16,244 per US$).
The largest expenditure by foreign tourists was on accommodation, with an average spending of US$676.95 (Rp11 million), or 41.65% of the total cost per visit.
The next largest expenditures were on food and beverages, averaging US$349.30 (Rp5.67 million); souvenirs, US$210.19 (Rp3.41 million); entertainment, US$139.73 (Rp2.27 million); local transportation, US$72.64 (Rp1.18 million); and domestic flights, US$35.22 (Rp572,110).
Other expenditures included vehicle rentals, local tour packages, health and beauty expenses, course/training fees, and other expenses as detailed in the accompanying graph.
BPS also recorded that the average duration of foreign tourist trips in 2023 was approximately 12.71 nights. This means that foreign tourists stayed in Indonesia for between 12 and 13 nights per visit.
In 2023, the majority (77.72%) of foreign tourists visited Indonesia for leisure, 8.35% for business, and 13.93% for other personal reasons.
