The Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant of the Covid-19 virus continues to spread globally, reaching 3.1 million cases by Friday, April 15, 2022. Cameroon ranks first, with a 1,000 percent weekly increase in Omicron cases. GISAID recorded 44 new Omicron cases in the country. Daily cases in this region increased by 2.33 percent compared to the previous day.
Saint Lucia follows in second place. Compared to the previous week, Omicron cases in this country increased by 600 percent. The daily increase in Omicron cases in this country also rose by 600 percent compared to the previous day, which recorded one case.
Furthermore, Omicron cases in Barbados increased by 600 percent to seven cases compared to the previous week; Omicron cases in China (PRC) increased by 442.86 percent to 76 cases compared to the previous week; and Omicron cases in Tunisia increased by 420 percent to 52 cases compared to the previous week.
Meanwhile, in Indonesia, the number of Omicron cases reached 10,218, a 1.62 percent increase compared to the previous day. Since it was first monitored, Omicron cases in Indonesia have continued to rise.
The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) urges everyone to remain vigilant in the face of the global surge in Omicron cases. The public is urged to consistently adhere to the 3M health protocols: wearing masks, maintaining distance, and washing hands.
