Most of Indonesia's Waste Originated from Households in 2020

Indonesia generated 67.8 million tons of waste in 2020. According to data from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK), 37.3% of Indonesia's waste originates from household activities.

The next largest source of waste comes from traditional markets, at 16.4%. 15.9% of waste comes from residential areas, and 14.6% from other sources.

7.29% of waste originates from commerce, 5.25% from public facilities, and 3.22% from offices.

By type, 39.8% of waste generated by the public is food waste. Plastic waste is next, with a proportion of 17%.

14.01% of waste consists of wood or branches. Waste in the form of paper or cardboard reaches 12.02%. Then, 6.94% of waste is of other types.

3.34% of waste is metal. There is 2.69% textile waste. Glass and rubber or leather waste each account for 2.29% and 1.95%, respectively.

Furthermore, 55.87% of waste was successfully managed last year. The remaining 44.13% of waste remains unmanaged.

Director of Waste Management at KLHK, Novrizal Tahar, stated that the government has targeted a 30% reduction in waste and 70% waste management by 2025. The approaches taken include limiting plastic waste and recycling inorganic waste.
