This week's Covid-19 statistics in Asia show that most countries have recorded a decrease in the number of deaths, a reversal from the previous period where death tolls continued to rise. This week, three countries recorded an increase in deaths, while eight others recorded fewer deaths than the previous week.
In terms of percentage, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths are Malaysia, Lebanon, the Philippines, India, and Saudi Arabia. A total of 129 deaths were recorded in these five countries as of Friday, February 17, 2023, representing weekly growth above 0 percent.
Malaysia ranks first, with a 100 percent weekly increase in deaths. Worldometer recorded eight deaths in the country, up from four the previous week.
Lebanon follows, with a 12.5 percent weekly growth in deaths. Nine deaths were reported in the country. Daily death statistics show a 12.5% increase compared to the previous day's eight deaths.
Next, deaths in the Philippines increased by 1.06%, India recorded seven deaths (unchanged from the previous week), and deaths in Saudi Arabia decreased by 0%.
Looking at the number of reported deaths, Japan recorded the highest number of deaths in Asia over the past seven days, with 1,123 deaths. This represents a 19.15% decrease compared to the previous week. Following Japan, Taiwan reported 425 deaths (down 8.41%), South Korea reported 124 deaths (down 21.52%), the Philippines reported 95 deaths (up 1.06%), and Indonesia reported 25 deaths (down 24.24%).
A total of 1,898 deaths were recorded in Asia over the past seven days. This accounts for 35.06 percent of global Covid-19 deaths, totaling 5,414. The number of deaths in Asia decreased compared to the previous seven-day accumulation of 2,270 deaths.
