One effort to suppress the spread of the coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) is through specimen testing. Specimen testing is conducted to identify more people infected with SARS-CoV-2. This allows for quicker treatment of more patients, simultaneously suppressing the rate of transmission.
South Korea and Singapore are countries that have conducted widespread testing. Up to March 24, 2020, South Korea had tested 348,582 people. With that number of tests, the ratio reached 6,799 specimens per 1 million population. Similarly, Singapore had tested 38,000 people, or 6,495 specimens per 1 million inhabitants as of March 20.
Meanwhile, Indonesia has only collected 2,863 specimens from a total population of 273.5 million. This results in a ratio of 10 specimens per 1 million population. President Joko Widodo has instructed the Covid-19 Task Force to conduct mass testing, primarily for healthcare workers and individuals known to have been in contact with confirmed Covid-19 cases.
