Humans need sleep to rest and replenish their energy. However, several reasons cause people to stay up all night or pull all-nighters.

According to a survey by the Kurious-Katadata Insight Center (KIC), the main activity people usually do when staying up late is watching something. This was stated by 53.1% of respondents.

Furthermore, 44.1% of respondents usually work or complete tasks while staying up late.

Other activities respondents usually do when staying up late include chatting with friends or family (30.1%) and playing games (29.4%).

Meanwhile, 6.1% of respondents engaged in other activities while staying up late, such as praying, looking after children, using social media, online shopping, and looking for jobs.

Citing Healthline, adults need 7-8 hours of sleep per day. If less than that, the body will experience various sleep disorders that impact health.

"Lack of sleep can cause poor cognitive function, increased inflammation, and decreased immune function. If sleep deprivation continues, it can increase the risk of chronic diseases," wrote Healthline in its report.

Kurious-KIC surveyed 875 respondents spread across various regions of Indonesia, with 52.1% male respondents and 47.9% female respondents.

Most respondents were from Java (excluding Jakarta) at 62.6%, followed by respondents from Sumatra (13.6%), and DKI Jakarta (13.5%).

Meanwhile, the proportion of respondents from Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Bali-Nusa Tenggara, and Maluku-Papua ranged from 4% to 1.3%.

Most respondents were from the 35-44 age group (33.3%), followed by the 25-34 age group (31%) and the 45-54 age group (21.5%).

The survey was conducted from June 26 to July 7, 2023, using the computer-assisted web interviewing (CAWI) method with a margin of error of approximately 3.31% and a 95% confidence level.
