According to a report from the Ministry of Finance, the government conducted 1,243 crackdowns on illegal cigarettes throughout January 2026, with evidence seized amounting to 249 million cigarettes.

The number of crackdowns increased by 53.8% compared to January 2025, which was 808 times.

The seized illegal cigarettes also surged by 295.9% compared to the results of the crackdown in January last year, which was around 63 million cigarettes.

According to the Deputy Minister of Finance, Suahasil Nazara, this surge occurred due to a large-scale seizure operation.

"One of the reasons is because there was a raid on an illegal cigarette warehouse in Pekanbaru," said Suahasil at a press conference on Monday (23/2/2026).

In that raid, Suahasil said, the Directorate General of Customs cooperated with other law enforcement officers.

"Then we were able to find this warehouse, and then carried out a large-scale seizure in that warehouse," he said.
