According to a report by the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), in March 2025, there were 66.83 million young people, or residents aged 16-30 years, in Indonesia.

Of this group, 25.86% had a smoking habit, whether tobacco cigarettes, e-cigarettes, or both.

When viewed by smoking frequency, 23.48% of young people usually smoked daily, and 2.38% smoked but not every day.

Broken down by region, the percentage of young people who smoke in rural areas reached 28.34%, while in urban areas it was lower, at 24.33%.

"Life in rural areas appears to be a significant risk factor for youth smoking behavior, thus requiring more attention from policymakers," wrote BPS.
