Only 12 Provinces Provide Deworming Medication to Toddlers Above the National Average

The 2024 Indonesian Nutritional Status Survey (SSGI) reveals that 78% of Indonesian toddlers aged 12-59 months received deworming medication in the 12 months prior to the survey.

Geographically, only 12 out of 36 provinces exceeded the national average. The highest rates were found in East Nusa Tenggara (91.8%), East Java (91.7%), and Yogyakarta Special Region (91.5%).

The following provinces showed deworming rates above the national average:

1. East Nusa Tenggara: 91.8%

2. East Java: 91.7%

3. Yogyakarta Special Region: 91.5%

4. Central Java: 91.2%

5. West Nusa Tenggara: 90.4%

6. West Java: 89%

7. Bali: 89%

8. West Sumatra: 86%

9. Riau Islands: 82.8%

10. Lampung: 82.1%

11. South Kalimantan: 81.2%

12. East Kalimantan: 78.8%

By age group, the rates were: 12-23 months (67.5%), 24-35 months (80.4%), 36-47 months (81.5%), and 48-59 months (82%). Note that data from Papua Pegunungan and Central Papua were unavailable.

Recently, a toddler in Sukabumi, West Java, reportedly died from helminthiasis. However, Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin stated that the death was not caused by worms, but rather a severe infection suspected to be triggered by tuberculosis or meningitis.

“The death was due to an infection. We suspect the infection could be meningitis, this is still a suspicion, it could also be tuberculosis. The child had been continuously coughing up phlegm for 3 months,” said Budi, as quoted by Antara news agency on Friday, Bandung, August 22, 2025.
