These Are the Types of Tea Most Consumed by Indonesians

YouGov conducted a survey on the types of tea most consumed in Indonesia. The results show that black tea is the favorite for the majority, or 64% of respondents.

Green tea came in second, preferred by 43% of respondents. This includes matcha and sencha, green tea drinks originating from Japan.

However, Japan is currently struggling to meet market demand for matcha.

This is influenced by a heatwave in Kyoto that disrupted the productivity of tencha farmers, the raw material for matcha. As a result, the price of matcha ingredients has skyrocketed amid soaring global demand.

"Yet even as matcha becomes part of everyday consumption, awareness of the shortage remains low," YouGov stated in its report.

YouGov found that 59% of tea drinkers in Indonesia are unaware of the current matcha shortage.

Here is a complete list of teas most consumed by Indonesian respondents, based on the YouGov survey:

1. Black tea: 64%

2. Green tea: 43%

3. Milk tea (including thai tea): 38%

4. Bubble tea: 20%

5. Flower tea (such as butterfly pea, osmanthus, and roselle): 20%

6. Herbal tea (such as chamomile and peppermint): 13%

7. Oolong tea: 10%

8. Spiced tea/chai: 6%

9. White tea: 5%

10. Other: 4%

This survey involved 1,656 respondents in Indonesia. Data collection was conducted using a questionnaire in the YouGov app from May 8-12, 2025.
