The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) report, *National Tourist Statistics 2024*, reveals a positive growth in the number of Indonesian national trips abroad in 2024.
A total of 8,946,794 trips were recorded in 2024. This figure represents an 18.99% increase compared to 2023, which recorded 7,518,895 trips.
"This growth indicates a high interest among Indonesian people to travel abroad," wrote BPS in the report published today, Monday (March 17, 2025).
BPS noted that the top destinations for Indonesian tourists remained largely unchanged. Neighboring countries such as Malaysia and Singapore continue to be the primary destinations. Saudi Arabia also ranks among the top destinations, primarily for Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages.
The breakdown of visits to these three countries is as follows: Malaysia accounts for 28.29% of total national tourist trips, Saudi Arabia 16.99%, and Singapore 13.86%.
"From the top 10 destination countries in 2024, it is evident that the movement of national tourists is still dominated by intra-regional travel," wrote BPS.
Other destinations include Thailand, China, Japan, Cambodia, and Australia, as shown in the graph.
BPS added that, according to the point of arrival, the majority of national tourist trips were made via air travel, reaching 79.29% of the total trips.
Meanwhile, land/border crossing points (PLBN) and sea routes contributed 6.2% and 14.51%, respectively. This pattern, according to BPS, is not significantly different from 2023, indicating that air transport remains the primary mode of travel.
BPS mentions that Indonesian national tourist trips abroad are often considered a challenge for the national tourism industry because they have the potential to reduce the foreign exchange circulating domestically.
However, the movement of national tourists abroad also has several strategic benefits for national tourism.
"Such as, enriching tourists' perspectives, driving innovation in the domestic tourism sector, enhancing the competitiveness of tourist destinations, and opening up opportunities for international cooperation," wrote BPS.
