The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reports that the average household expenditure on food reached Rp751,789 per person per month in 2024.
Based on regional classification, expenditure in cities amounted to Rp809,847 and in villages to Rp669,039 per person per month.
BPS further detailed the commodities purchased within the food group.
The largest expenditure was on ready-to-eat food and beverages, amounting to Rp238,902 per capita per month. This was followed by cereals, including rice, at Rp94,641 per person per month.
This figure is very close to that spent on cigarettes, which reached Rp94,461 per person per month.
Cigarette consumption was even higher than that of nutrient-rich foods such as vegetables (Rp59,988) and fish/shrimp/squid/shellfish (Rp57,665).

Cigarette expenditure was also higher than that on eggs and milk (Rp37,776), and meat (Rp36,488).

* Oil and coconut: Rp18,283
* Spices: Rp15,174
* Nuts: Rp14,716
* Tubers: Rp8,542
* Other consumption: Rp13,402.
