A Ministry of Transportation (Kemenhub) survey predicts that approximately 110.67 million people will travel during the 2024/2025 Christmas and New Year (Nataru) holiday period.
This travel potential is spread across all Indonesian provinces over 22 days, from December 18, 2024, to January 8, 2025.
Based on the mode of transportation to be used, people prefer private vehicles, with a proportion of 53.78%.
The breakdown shows that 39.92 million people plan to use cars and 19.60 million plan to use motorcycles.
The most popular public transportation mode is buses, with a projected number of 16.64 million people.
Furthermore, 14.22 million people plan to use intercity trains; 9.80 million, airplanes; 5.43 million, ferries; and 2.62 million, sea vessels.
"The biggest reason for their travel during the Nataru holiday period is to visit tourist destinations, accounting for 45.63%," said Minister of Transportation Dudy Purwagandhi in a meeting with Commission V of the DPR (House of Representatives) on Wednesday (4/12/2024).
Other reasons include returning to their hometowns (32.36%), celebrating Christmas and New Year in their hometowns (19.96%), and for work or business purposes (2%).
This Kemenhub survey was conducted online from October 23-30, 2024, in collaboration with the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS).
