The Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant of the Covid-19 virus continues to spread globally, reaching 4.28 million cases by Tuesday, August 2, 2022. Taiwan recorded the highest increase in Omicron cases, with weekly growth reaching 1,039.13 percent. GISAID recorded 2,096 new Omicron cases in the country. Daily cases in this region increased by 932.51 percent compared to the previous day.
Next is Cameroon, which recorded a 33.33 percent increase in Omicron cases compared to the previous week. Daily Omicron cases in the country increased by 33.33 percent compared to the previous day.
Furthermore, Omicron cases in Guinea increased by 22.28 percent to 225 cases compared to the previous week; Kuwait saw an increase of 313 Omicron cases (up 10.6 percent); and Italy recorded 46,968 additional Omicron cases (up 10.59 percent).
Meanwhile, in Indonesia, as of yesterday, 17,090 Omicron cases were recorded, a 0.55 percent increase compared to the previous day. Since it was first monitored, Omicron cases in Indonesia have continued to rise.
The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) urges everyone to remain vigilant in the face of the global surge in Omicron cases. The public is urged to consistently adhere to the 3M health protocols: wearing masks, maintaining distance, and washing hands.
