Based on a report from the Indonesian Ministry of Health (Kemenkes), there were 88 confirmed cases of monkeypox in Indonesia as of August 17, 2024, with the majority found on Java Island.
The highest number of confirmed cases was in Jakarta, with 59 cases. West Java reported 13 cases, Banten 9 cases, East Java 3 cases, and Yogyakarta 3 cases.
Only one monkeypox case was recorded on Sumatra Island, specifically in the Riau Islands.
Acting Director General of Disease Prevention and Control at Kemenkes, Yudhi Pramono, explained that 87 of these cases have recovered. One case is still undergoing treatment as the patient was only recently confirmed with monkeypox in June.
Of the 88 confirmed cases, 54 met the criteria for whole genome sequencing (WGS) to determine the virus variant.
"All 54 cases were of the Clade IIB variant. This Clade II has been the majority variant spreading the Mpox outbreak since 2022, with lower fatality rates and transmission primarily through sexual contact," said Yudhi in an online press conference on Sunday, August 18, 2024.
To address this situation, Yudhi stated that his team has prepared a monkeypox management strategy. This includes surveillance to identify active cases in all health facilities, epidemiological investigations, and case examination and reporting.
"We also received assistance from ASEAN, approximately 2,850 doses of mpox vaccine, and 1,600 vaccine vials from Denmark," Yudhi added.
