Jakarta, Province with the Highest Number of Hypertension Cases

Based on a survey by the Indonesian Ministry of Health (Kemenkes), in 2023, 8% of the Indonesian population aged 15 and above were diagnosed by a doctor as having high blood pressure or hypertension.

Broken down by region, DKI Jakarta had the highest proportion of hypertensive residents, reaching 12.6%.

Other provinces with a relatively high proportion of hypertensive residents are DI Yogyakarta, North Sulawesi, and East Kalimantan, with a prevalence above 10%.

Meanwhile, the lowest prevalence of hypertension was in Papua Pegunungan, at only 2.2%.

The following is a list of the 10 provinces with the highest national prevalence of hypertension based on doctor's diagnoses in 2023:

1. DKI Jakarta: 12.6%
2. DI Yogyakarta: 12.3%
3. North Sulawesi: 12.1%
4. East Kalimantan: 11.1%
5. West Java: 9.9%
6. Banten: 9.5%
7. Bangka Belitung: 8.8%
8. Central Sulawesi: 8.3%
9. South Kalimantan: 8.2%

According to the Minister of Health, Budi Gunadi Sadikin, hypertension can increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, and other diseases that can cause death.

"Hypertension is often called a 'silent killer' because people with high blood pressure have no complaints," said Budi in a webinar on World Hypertension Day 2023, Tuesday (6/6/2023).

Budi stated that hypertension sufferers often feel healthy even though their blood pressure is high. Therefore, he urged the public to conduct early detection.

"For people who already have hypertension, continue to apply the principle of regular health checks, address the disease with appropriate treatment, maintain a healthy and balanced diet, and strive for physical activity and avoid smoking," said Budi.
