2016, Foreign Tourist Arrivals Reach New High

The number of foreign tourist visits to Indonesia from January to November 2016 reached 10.41 million, a 10.46 percent increase compared to the same period in 2015, which was 9.42 million. The number of foreign tourists visiting Indonesia throughout 2016 set a new record high, exceeding the number of foreign tourists in 2015, which totaled 10.23 million. Based on data from the Central Statistics Agency (Badan Pusat Statistik), the number of foreign tourists to Indonesia has more than doubled since 2000, when it was 5 million. In 2019, President Joko Widodo targeted 20 million foreign tourist visits to Indonesia. The number of foreign tourist visits to Indonesia in November 2016 increased by 19.98 percent to 1 million compared to the same month the previous year. However, compared to October 2016, the number decreased by 3.68 percent.

The decrease in the number of foreign tourists to Indonesia in November 2016 caused the average occupancy rate of star-rated hotels in 27 provinces to fall by 0.32 points to 55.76 percent compared to November 2015. Similarly, the average length of stay for foreign and Indonesian guests in the 27 provinces during November 2016 also decreased by 0.03 points to 1.72 days compared to November 2015.
